Once you’ve finished with the 220 – grit sandpaper, it’s time for the finer grades. I usually use 320 – grit and then 400 – grit sandpapers. These are for the final touches, making the surface as smooth as possible. The bar should now have a very smooth, almost satin – like finish. You can really see the difference in the appearance of the stainless steel at this point.
Now that the sanding is done, it’s time to move on to the polishing compound. There are different types of polishing compounds available, but I recommend a high – quality one specifically designed for stainless steel. Apply a small amount of the compound to a clean cloth or directly to the buffing wheel if you’re using one.
If you’re using a buffing wheel, attach it to a power drill or a bench grinder. Make sure it’s spinning at a moderate speed. Then, gently press the bar against the spinning buffing wheel, moving it slowly and evenly across the surface. The compound will start to break down and create a shiny finish. Keep applying more compound as needed.
If you’re doing it by hand, just apply the compound to the cloth and start rubbing the bar in a circular motion. You’ll need to put in a bit of effort, but you’ll still get a great result. Keep rubbing until the bar starts to shine. You might need to go over the surface a few times to get the desired level of polish.
After you’ve applied the polishing compound, use a clean, dry cloth to wipe off any excess compound. Then, take a look at your handiwork. The stainless steel bar should now have a beautiful, mirror – like finish. If you see any areas that need more work, you can repeat the polishing process in those spots.
One thing I want to mention is that safety is really important when polishing stainless steel bars. If you’re using power tools, make sure to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from any flying debris. Also, be careful when handling the sandpaper and polishing compounds, as some of them can be a bit rough on your hands. Gloves are a good idea.
